A long time ago before the World Wide Web was in full swing, backlinks represented one of the most important factors determining the ranking of a particular website. Backlinks are basically links received by your website from another site. The content of the websites linking to yours determines your position on the search engines; thus, the more high-quality backlinks you have, the higher your ranking will be. Higher ranking translates into more traffic and higher sales.

The question then becomes, how do you get backlinks? What backlinks do I need? There is actually no secret here, all you need to do is find other websites that are relevant to yours and link to them. You should ideally provide your content on these websites, which they will gladly do in return for some backlinks back to their site. You do not necessarily have to directly link to the product or service being offered by the other website; indirect linking techniques can be as effective.

For example, if you own a fitness website, and someone comes to your site and is interested in getting in shape. Instead of just pointing them to your own website, why not encourage them to go to another site that may offer them more information on exercise and nutrition? You can give them a link to a site that offers great information on cardiovascular fitness and targeting abdominal exercises. Your link wouldn't technically count because it would be considered natural linking. Your visitor would still be influenced by the link and would click on the link to get more information on the topic.

This is a great example of using two different domains to achieve backlink success. By using the same domain name and pointing the same page on the two sites, there is less chance of confusion. Your target audience will not have to guess which site to visit because the link makes sense. You could also use the same content on each domain name. However, keep in mind that the content of each page should be different in some way.

Once the domain name has been established, the next step is to build the actual content. There are many ways to accomplish this, but one way that has been proven to work is to write articles with the exact same title on each domain that points back to the main site. The content should be unique, interesting and relevant to your target market.

As your content is being created, you can begin to post backlinks to your website. Keep in mind that the more backlinks you have on each site, the better your search engine ranking will be. However, make sure that you are not posting the same backlinks on every page of the websites.

Some people believe that having only one backlink on their domain name is better than having too many backlinks. While having only one backlink does not hurt your rankings, having too many can actually hurt them. If you have an important backlink on your site that was included in a post by a respected authority, then it is alright to have two or three. However, do not create a backlink network by having more than ten on each of your pages. This will hurt you rather than help you.

Now that your backlinks have been created, you need to focus on getting them in front of the right customers. You need to generate content for your customers in order to ensure that they will return and bookmark your site. Remember that in addition to having great content, you also need to have backlinks pointing to your site. With the right combination, you will be able to get the most from your domain name backlinks.
